The British Tugowners Association held a successful and well attended AGM and conference at Formby Hall, near Liverpool, on 9 -10 April. Marc Niederer of Svitzer was re-elected as Chairman and Mike Percharde was elected and Vice-Chairman. Delegates had the opportunity to hear the chamber’s Chief Executive, Guy Platten, put forward his vision and strategy in a key-note address. Other speakers included David Huck, Peel Ports Director, Colum Leggett from the Liverpool Marine Office and Andy Moll, Deputy Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents. Event sponsors, Samson Ropes and Damen Shipyards also gave updates on their products and services. The BTA’s annual award for the individual contributing most to the industry was presented to Nick Dorman of Targe for his strong leadership and organisation of the annual safety seminar, which has been instrumental in reducing accidents in the industry. Clear evidence of this is the halving of reportable incidents in the last 10 years. As Operations Director at Targe he has overseen a culture and ethos that seen not a single lost time injury during 20 years and 2 million man hours of towage operations at BP’s Hound Point Terminal. The winner of the annual photographic competition was also announced as Sam Willis of Svitzer.
