a process to be placed on the National Curriculum and Qualifications Framework (QCF) in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. The new units that will allow basic training up to MSQ Level 2 for Tug Crew are already available on the QCF with qualifications for Level 3 (Officer of the Watch) and Level 4 (Master and engineer) to be made available soon afterwards. In order to obtain Tug certification you are required to be on an approved training program sponsored by an employer and complete BTA’s Task Record Book (TRB). The TRB’s for the Deck Rating Tug Hand Level 2 and the Tug Engine Rating Level 2 are now available to purchase from our offices.
The new MSQ units have been developed to ensure that common knowledge material remains same across the various sectors and is taught as independent units which will give credits to individuals for successful outcome of each unit. In future, personnel with the MSQ qualifications should be able to transfer much more easily between the different maritime sectors than at present. The teaching of these MSQ units is expected to be available from several UK colleges and other dedicated tug training providers once these units get approval and are placed on the QCF.
The relevant units will also be used to deliver the specialist Towage Endorsements, shortly to be announced by the MCA and new Marine Guidance Notice will also be issued to that effect. These will be important evidence of towage competence to supplement other Licences or generic STCW certificates, however if you are following a BTA approved scheme these would automatically be endorsed in the certificate of competency upon successful passing of MCA oral and written examination.
With the Government’s current drive to support Modern Apprenticeships, some BTA members have also started to take advantage of the apprenticeship schemes at level 2 and possibly level 3.
Please revisit this site again soon as we will be able to provide more updates as and when they become available.
