Careers at Sea is again sponsoring National Careers Week following the success of the 2018 campaign.
National Careers Week (NCW) is a celebration of careers guidance and free resources in education across the UK. The aim is to provide a focus for careers guidance activity at an important stage in the academic calendar to help support young people leaving education.
The week, which takes place between 4-9 March, includes ‘Tidal Tuesday’ which focuses heavily on maritime careers. Careers at Sea’s sponsorship of the event will help them to promote opportunities in the Merchant Navy – particularly cadetships and ratings roles for Engineering, ETO and Navigation. The campaign reach schools, colleges and youth groups as well as careers advisors across the UK.
Rachel Gurnett, who coordinates the Careers At Sea campaign on behalf of the Merchant Navy Training Board, said:
“This will be an excellent opportunity to reach the future generation of seafarers and inspire them to start a Career at Sea. I will be working with the NCW team attending and arranging events, supported by our brilliant Careers at Sea Ambassadors.
“We are calling those in the shipping industry to take part an engage in the promotional activities wherever they can. The more people involved, the bigger the impact we can have on the young people taking part in the week all over the UK.”
The UK Chamber is encouraging its members to support the NCW campaign.
Support us on Social Media
We will be using #TidalTuesday on 5th March and will be sharing events throughout the week – like, share and spread the word about the activities going on.
There will also be news and updates during the build-up to the week about how schools and young people can engage throughout. Spread these to your followers and let them know what’s going on too. Find us on Twitter and Facebook.
Host an Open Day
Whether this is on your ships, in your ports or a tour of a college or training centre, this can open the eyes of young people to what can be expected during their Merchant Navy career.
Imagine what you can inspire as you show a group of young people what a bridge looks like, how a ship docks in a port or the kind of high-quality training they can experience to develop their skills.
Sign up to the Careers at Sea Ambassador team
If you have worked at sea, we’d love to hear from you. Our team of Ambassadors are sent regular updates of event invites from schools and youth groups, requesting visits and presentations on a Merchant Navy career (see this page for more information). During NCW, we expect this demand to increase. The more Ambassadors we have, the more events we can attend. If you can’t help this way yourself, spread the word to those you know who could volunteer their time.
If you would like to find out more about what Careers at Sea does or how to get involved in National Careers Week 2019, please visit the Careers at Sea website or contact Rachel Gurnett at the MNTB. We look forward to hearing from you!
