Following the issue of MGN 495(M+F), which sets out the routes to certification for a tug officer of the watch and master, there has been increased demand for training. The respective qualifications are STCW limited Certificates of Competency, and are for vessels of either less than 500GT or less than 3000GT, with a near coastal (150 miles) restriction.
The trainee will need to complete a number of STCW short course, the appropriate period of tug service underpinned by completion of a Training Record Book, and Maritime Studies Qualifications (MSQs) at college or via distance learning. The CoC is then awarded after passing the MCA oral exam.
MSQs cover a range of subjects and may be offered by a number of colleges depending on demand. Distance learning is also an option. In this respect MARITAS Ltd is able to deliver modules in a flexible manner to meet company and individual needs.
Full details are set out in MGN 495 (M+F).
