The purpose of the British Tugowners Association (BTA) is to represent the interests of its members in order to provide a favourable environment in which to do business. The BTA is not solely for tug operators however, and there is a strong cohort of professional companies with an interest in towage as Associate Members. These Associates comprise tug builders, shipbrokers, rope & engine manufacturers and legal professionals.

It is important to remember that the BTA is fully incorporated into the UK Chamber of Shipping, and that full tug-operating members of the BTA are full ship-owning members of the UK Chamber of Shipping in their own right with all the benefits and access that this accrues.
