BTA launches Second Edition of Rope Selection, Procurement & Usage Guide
The British Tugowners Association (BTA) has published the Second Edition of Rope Selection, Procurement & Usage, providing updated guidance to support tug owners, operators, masters and technical personnel in the safe and effective management of towlines throughout their lifecycle.
Building on the highly respected First Edition, the revised Guide reflects industry learnings and evolving operational practice, with a strengthened focus on informed procurement and system‑based thinking. Central to the update is the expanded use of the Towline Operational Assessment (TOA), which brings together tug characteristics, operational demands and environmental conditions to support structured decision‑making and informed dialogue between operators and rope suppliers.
The Second Edition reinforces the importance of viewing the towline not as an isolated item, but as part of an integrated towing system. By considering the interaction between vessels, deck equipment, connection arrangements and operating conditions, operators are better equipped to identify and manage the risks that arise in service.
Coverage of through‑life management has been significantly expanded, with updated guidance on installation, inspection, traceability, maintenance, testing and retirement. Certification, record‑keeping and gog systems are addressed in greater depth to promote consistency and support sound operational decisions across a wide range of towage practices.
As with all BTA guidance, the Guide is intended to be applied with appropriate professional judgement, alongside manufacturer recommendations and company safety management systems. Operators are encouraged to incorporate the guidance into their operational procedures and training, and to share feedback with the BTA to support continuous improvement and future editions.
